The Formula Boats Center Console Series is built around offshore performance with a choice between purpose-built fishing cockpits and luxury sport layouts on the same deep-water center-console platforms.

The Center Console family is really two hull sizes and two missions. Fish models spend their aft cockpit on livewells, fish boxes, tackle and rigging. Sport models spend more of the same platform on lounge space, swim access and entertaining.

Fish and Sport are not trim packages. They change how the cockpit earns its square footage. Fish boats devote major volume to live bait, fish storage, rigging and optional tower work. Sport boats turn more of that same hull into lounge, beverage and swim space.

The 387-to-457 jump is also substantial. Beam grows from 12 feet to 13 feet 9 inches, fuel from 500 to 700 gallons, and propulsion settles into triple V12 600s on the 457. That is a marina, range and service change before the cabin is considered.

Formula gives buyers enough propulsion and layout choice that the category name alone is not a buying decision. The exact engine architecture, cabin plan and storage infrastructure need to be chosen together.

The useful shopping order is mission first, hull size second, engine package third. A buyer who gets Fish versus Sport wrong will fight the cockpit every weekend even if the horsepower and paint are perfect.

The right series page should help a buyer reject the wrong model before price becomes the focus.

How to Choose Between Formula Fish and Sport Center Consoles

Start with the aft cockpit. If live bait, fish-box capacity, rigging space, outriggers and working deck area will be used on most trips, the Fish version should be the default comparison. The Sport layout makes more sense when the same offshore hull will spend more time carrying guests, swimming and entertaining.

Then choose 387 versus 457. The 387 keeps the platform at roughly 41 feet overall with a 12-foot beam and 500 gallons of fuel. The 457 grows to more than 49 feet overall, a 13-foot-9-inch beam and 700 gallons. That is a marina, haul-out and service jump, not merely another ten feet of brochure length.

Engine count belongs near the top of the decision. The 387 can be configured around two large V12 outboards or triple packages, while the 457 uses triple 600 Verados. More engines can improve redundancy and thrust but add lower units, props, steering hardware and scheduled service.

Fishing buyers should compare livewell and fish-box volume before electronics. Sport buyers should compare boarding, aft seating and swim access before audio. The deck mission should determine the model, not the easiest option to demonstrate in a showroom.

Finally, confirm where the boat will live. Twelve feet of beam is already marina-oriented. Thirteen feet nine inches makes professional transport, haul-out capacity and slip width even more important.

Owning a Formula Center Console Offshore

These boats are powered and fueled for offshore work. A 387 can carry 500 gallons, while a 457 carries 700. Fuel is therefore both an operating expense and a major part of loaded displacement. Owners should plan range from real cruise burn and reserve rather than translating tank capacity directly into miles.

Outboard service is multiplied by engine count. A twin-600 387 has two lower units, propellers, cooling systems and service histories. Triple-engine 387 and 457 builds add a third of each. Joystick and steering systems also need to operate as an integrated package.

Fish models add pumps and wet systems that deserve their own maintenance schedule. Livewells, macerated fish boxes, raw-water washdowns, freezer plates, rigging stations and tower equipment can be more important to an angler than another entertainment option.

Sport models shift that burden toward seating hardware, refrigeration, cabin climate, swim-platform systems and guest-facing equipment. The mechanical hull may be similar, but the failure points that ruin a weekend are different.

Generators, cabin air conditioning, freshwater, private heads and large helm networks make both sizes more complex than a bare offshore center console. Battery condition and charging performance should be tested with the engines off and the hotel loads operating.

Marina infrastructure is part of normal ownership. Confirm pump-out, shore-power needs, service access, travel-lift capacity, fuel availability and technician support for the installed Mercury package before closing.

Insurance should reflect offshore navigation, engine value and actual storage location. The loan payment is only sustainable when the owner also has room for fuel, engine service and the wet systems that define the boat.

Formula Center Console Series Questions

The current package covers 387 Center Console Fish, 387 Center Console Sport, 457 Center Console Fish and 457 Center Console Sport.

Fish models devote more cockpit volume to livewells, fish boxes, rigging and offshore angling systems. Sport models use more of the same platform for seating, swimming, lounging and entertaining.

Move up when the 13-foot-9-inch beam, 700-gallon fuel system, triple-600 platform and larger fishing or social cockpit solve a real mission. The 457 also demands more marina and haul-out infrastructure.

Formula supports both large twin and triple Mercury packages on the 387 family. The exact engine count should be confirmed from the individual build.

The current 457 platform uses triple Mercury V12 600 Verados, providing 1,800 total horsepower.

Prioritize engines, steering, joystick, livewell pumps, fish boxes, raw-water systems, electronics, generator, cabin climate and signs of hard offshore use around the tower and transom.

In addition to propulsion and hull structure, test seating hardware, swim access, refrigeration, cabin systems, head plumbing, climate control and the helm network.

Potentially. Model year, condition, value, seller type, transaction size and borrower qualifications matter. Send the exact listing and engine package for a boat-specific discussion.

Choose Fish or Sport Before You Choose the Payment

The right Formula Center Console should make its offshore mission obvious from the cockpit. Once the 387 or 457 layout and engine package fit the buyer, financing can be structured around the actual boat.
