Series Overview

The Regal Yacht Series is really three decisions layered together

Regal’s Yacht category makes more sense when buyers stop reading the model names as a ladder and start with three separate questions: how much boat is needed, whether the family wants a coupe or a flybridge, and whether the owner prefers sterndrives or outboards. The lineup now covers ten models because Regal repeats those choices across 36-, 38- and 42-foot platforms rather than treating every yacht as a separate concept.

The 36-foot pair is the simplest. The 36 Grande Coupe and 36 XO share an 11-foot-7-inch beam and similar cabin mission. Grande Coupe uses sterndrive propulsion; XO puts the engines outside the hull. There is no 36 FLY or 36 FXO in this category, so buyers at this size are choosing propulsion inside an enclosed-coupe format.

The 38-foot group adds another axis. A buyer can choose 38 Grande Coupe or 38 XO for a lower-profile enclosed yacht, then choose 38 FLY or 38 FXO when a second helm and upper social deck are worth the added height. Within each architecture, the propulsion split remains familiar: Grande Coupe and FLY use sterndrive layouts, while XO and FXO use outboards.

The 42-foot group repeats that matrix at a much larger ownership scale. All four use a 13-foot beam. Grande Coupe and FLY carry 258 gallons of fuel; XO and FXO carry 500 gallons. The outboard versions therefore change more than engine location. They create a very different fuel, transom and service plan at yacht scale.

This page should help buyers narrow those choices before financing. A 42 FXO should not win because it is the largest or most expensive Regal on the page. A 36 Grande Coupe should not lose because it has fewer levels. The right boat is the smallest and simplest Regal Yacht that solves the crew, weather, cruising and propulsion requirements the owner will actually use.

What defines the Regal Yacht category

The enclosed upper salon is the common thread across Grande Coupe and XO models. Sliding glass, climate control and a galley on the social level let the crew remain together without retreating below when weather changes. Buyers who boat in hot summers, cold shoulder seasons or frequent rain can get real value from that protected main deck.

FLY and FXO models use the same size classes differently. The upper helm creates a second social area, better sightlines and a more open-air driving experience. The cost is physical height, windage, bridge-clearance planning and another set of helm electronics, seating and covers exposed to the weather. A flybridge is valuable when it gets used, not because it photographs like a larger yacht.

Propulsion is the other defining split. Sterndrive Grande Coupe and FLY models preserve a different stern and machinery-space arrangement. XO and FXO models put engines at the transom and carry substantially more fuel in the 38- and 42-foot classes. Outboards can simplify certain service tasks and allow gearcases to be trimmed clear, but they also occupy stern real estate and multiply engine-service points.

Cabin volume rises sharply from 36 to 42 feet. The difference is not just sleeping capacity. Larger beam creates more room around berths, heads, passageways and storage. That comfort can matter on a four-day cruise while adding little value to an owner who returns to the same marina every night.

The Yacht category therefore rewards buyers who define the mission first. Start with trip length, crew size, climate and marina. Then decide coupe or flybridge. Then choose propulsion. Only after those three decisions should the exact model and payment be compared.

Other Regal categories to compare before committing to Yacht ownership

Regal Express Cruiser

Compare the Express Cruiser category when overnight capability matters but 36 feet of yacht systems, beam and dockage feel excessive. Models such as the 26 XO, 26 Express, 33 XO and 33 Express can cover weekend trips with a smaller ownership footprint.

Regal Sav

Compare the SAV category when fishing, diving, open activity space and water access matter as much as cabin comfort. SAV models trade some enclosed-yacht formality for a more activity-driven cockpit.

Regal Outboard Bowrider

Compare the larger LX models when the owner wants yacht-scale day space and outboard propulsion but does not need the same enclosed cruising interior.

The lineup is easiest to scan as a matrix. At 36 feet, choose coupe architecture and then sterndrive or outboard. At 38 and 42 feet, choose coupe or flybridge first, then choose sterndrive or outboard inside that architecture. The specifications below show why a model name alone does not describe the ownership difference.

How to choose among the 10 Regal Yacht models

Start with the 36 Grande Coupe when a couple wants the smallest enclosed Regal yacht in this category and prefers sterndrive propulsion. The 36 XO answers the same basic cabin need with outboards and more fuel. Buyers who are happy with the 36 interior should not move up simply because the 38 looks more substantial at the dock.

Move to the 38 Grande Coupe when the coupe format still fits but the 36 cabin feels constrained. Choose the 38 XO when the same enclosed architecture needs outboard propulsion. These two are the direct coupe comparison at 38 feet and should be sea-trialed back to back whenever possible.

Choose the 38 FLY when an upper helm is central to the experience and sterndrive propulsion still makes sense. Choose the 38 FXO when the same flybridge goal is paired with outboards. If the owner is only mildly interested in driving upstairs, a flybridge adds height and maintenance without enough payoff.

At 42 feet, the Grande Coupe and XO remain the lower-profile options. The 42 Grande Coupe is the sterndrive choice with 258 gallons of fuel. The 42 XO is the outboard coupe and carries 500 gallons. That fuel difference changes range potential, wet weight and refueling cost enough that it belongs in the decision before amenities are compared.

The 42 FLY and 42 FXO are the largest two-level yachts in this Regal category. FLY keeps the sterndrive arrangement; FXO uses outboards and the 500-gallon fuel plan. These boats make sense when the owner will use the bridge often, needs the 13-foot beam and is prepared for the marina and systems cost that come with it.

A buyer torn between 38 and 42 should inspect both cabins with overnight bags aboard. The extra beam on the 42 should solve something specific: berth access, privacy, galley room, storage or the number of people staying aboard. If it does not, the 38 may offer nearly the same cruising enjoyment with less infrastructure.

Yacht ownership changes with architecture as much as length

Coupe owners depend heavily on powered glass, sliding doors, climate control and the systems that keep the main salon comfortable. Those components should be tested under heat and load because the protected upper deck is the reason to choose a coupe over a more open day boat.

Flybridge owners maintain another helm, more exposed upholstery, covers, electronics and bridge hardware. Height also affects bridge clearance, storage and windage at the dock. The bridge can become the favorite place on the yacht, but only if its maintenance is accepted as part of the experience.

Outboard XO and FXO models add engine count and much larger fuel capacities in the 38- and 42-foot classes. Sterndrive models keep a different stern and machinery arrangement. Service access should be evaluated locally because the most convenient propulsion system is the one qualified technicians can support where the boat lives.

All ten models carry hotel systems that deserve a maintenance reserve: freshwater, sanitation, refrigeration, shore power, charging, climate equipment and networked electronics. Larger models add more pumps, more zones and more places for a minor fault to interrupt a trip.

The ownership budget should therefore be built around the exact model, not a generic ‘Regal Yacht’ number. A 36 Grande Coupe and 42 FXO share a category but not an annual operating scale.
